If you’re running a small business or working solo in Bristol, there’s a good chance you’ve asked yourself one of these questions:

Am I actually getting enough out of my hot desk?
Would a dedicated desk make life easier?
And at what point does it make sense to get our own office?

The answer isn’t simply about how much space you need: it’s about how you work, how your business is growing and how you want it to feel when you turn up each morning. Get it wrong, and you can end up paying for space you don’t use. Get it right, and your workspace can quietly make running your business easier.

So, which one are you? Hot Desk, Dedicated Desk or Private Office: What’s the Difference?

Hot Desk: For flexibility without the commitment
Best for: people who don’t need a desk every day.

A hot desk gives you the freedom to use the workspace when you need it, whether that’s through Day Pass(es) or a set number of days each month. You don’t have a permanent seat, but you do have a professional place to work, a guaranteed monitor and seat, unlimited coffee, and the opportunity to get involved in our community networking events. It’s a good fit if you’re splitting your time between home, meetings, travel and the office and don’t want to pay for a permanent desk you’re not going to use.

The question to ask yourself: Do I actually need my own desk, or do I just need somewhere good to work?

Dedicated Desk: When you’re ready for something that feels like yours
Best for: people who want consistency without committing to an office.

There’s also something surprisingly valuable about having a space that’s yours. You can leave your second monitor set up. Keep your notebook, plant or paperwork where you left it. Get to know the people sitting around you. And gradually, your desk starts to feel less like somewhere you work and more like your base.

The question to ask yourself: Would having the same space every day make my working life noticeably easier?

Private Office: When your business has outgrown the desk
Best for: growing teams who need privacy, consistency and room to grow.

This is where the conversation changes. A private office gives you an enclosed space for you and your team, with an all-inclusive monthly rate and the ability to create a workplace that feels like your business. There’s a door you can close. Somewhere to have a proper client conversation. Space for your team to work together. And room to make the space your own. But you’re not cut off from everything else happening around you. You still have the wider building, shared spaces, events, coffee, amenities and community on your doorstep — your own office, without having to build everything around it from scratch.

Here’s the bit people don’t think about: Culture

The difference between these options isn’t just four walls and a desk.

It’s how you want your working day to feel.

With a hot desk or dedicated desk, you’re plugging into an existing community. There are people around you, conversations happening, events to go to and opportunities to meet people outside your immediate business. For freelancers, consultants and small businesses, that can make a huge difference. Working from home gives you a laptop and a Wi-Fi connection. A professional workspace gives you somewhere to work, somewhere to meet people, and somewhere your business can exist beyond your spare room.

A private office is different again. You’re creating your own team culture and your own environment, while still having the wider community around you.

You get your own space without completely going it alone. And then there’s the money…

It’s tempting to compare the three options by looking at the monthly price and choosing the cheapest one. But that’s not necessarily the best way to think about it. The better question is: What is the cost of not having the right workspace?
Our most recent member census found that flexibility – particularly the ability to scale up or down – was a key reason members chose Origin over a traditional lease. That’s important because your business today probably won’t look the same in 12 months. A hot desk might make perfect sense when you’re working solo. A dedicated desk could be the sweet spot when you want consistency. And once you’re building a team, managing clients and thinking about your next hire, a private office can start to make more sense, not simply because you need more desks, but because you need your workspace to work harder for you.

5 signs you’ve outgrown your current workspace

Be honest. How many of these sound familiar?

  1. You’re booking meeting rooms constantly.
Because meeting a client at your desk suddenly doesn’t feel quite right.
  2. You’ve started leaving half your life at your desk.
    Laptop, monitor, notebook, paperwork…
  3. You’ve hired your first few team members.
And suddenly “I’ll work from wherever” doesn’t really work when other people depend on you.
  4. You’re thinking about your business differently.
You’re no longer just looking for somewhere to work. You want somewhere your business can actually grow.
  5. You keep thinking about getting an office.
Sometimes the biggest sign is simply that you’re already considering it.

And no, that doesn’t automatically mean you need to jump straight into a private office. For some businesses, moving from a hot desk to a dedicated desk is the natural next step. For others, going straight into a private office makes more sense. The important thing is that your workspace should move with your business, not hold it back.

So… which one is right for you?
There’s no magic number of employees or revenue figure that suddenly means “you need an office now.” It comes down to how you work, how often you’re in Bristol, how client-facing you are, whether you’re growing a team and how much flexibility you want.

The best workspace is the one that fits your business now — while giving you somewhere to go next.
