At Origin Workspace, community has always been at the heart of how we work. But as our coworking community continues to grow, so too does the diversity of industries, expertise, and ambition within it. That’s why we recently launched a new format for 2026: sector-specific Origin Tables, designed to bring professionals together around shared challenges, opportunities, and ideas. Our first session, which focused on sustainability professionals within our coworking space, delivered exactly what we had hoped for: an open conversation, meaningful insights, and the kind of connections that only happen when people share a meal rather than a screen.
Traditional networking events are great for broad connections, but sector-focused conversations unlock something deeper. When professionals working in similar fields come together, the dialogue moves quickly beyond introductions into practical insight, collaboration and future partnerships.
The sustainability sector is evolving rapidly, shaped by policy shifts, technological change and growing demand for measurable environmental impact. Bringing these voices together in one room created a rare opportunity for honest reflection on what’s happening now and what’s coming next.
Several recurring themes emerged during the discussion.
Infrastructure limitations
One participant highlighted how grid infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with new renewable supply. This creates barriers to growth despite strong market demand.
Policy uncertainty
Another shared how changing government policy makes long-term planning difficult. Organisations investing in infrastructure or large-scale environmental initiatives are particularly affected by this.
Global market disruption
There was also conversation around international trade shifts flooding the UK market with equipment, reshaping pricing, procurement, and strategy across the sector.
These insights reflect the reality many sustainability-focused businesses are navigating. Complexity, rapid change and the need for trusted networks to share knowledge.
While the challenges facing the sustainability sector are real, the discussion around the Origin Table highlighted significant opportunities.
Participants spoke about housing-led sustainability infrastructure, where new developments can drive biodiversity gains and deliver tangible environmental impact alongside community benefits. There’s also growing momentum around renewable energy and localised climate initiatives, creating spaces for innovation and collaboration across sectors.
