A few weeks ago, we caught up with Rupert Stuart-Baker, Managing Director at Beach Baker. We talked about everything from running a business and the importance of dedicating time for wellbeing, to navigating through these uncertain times.
We started Beach Baker during the recession back in 2008, offering comprehensive recruitment services to the Real Estate and Construction sectors. At the time of launching, we really learned a lot about how lean our business could be and the importance of resilience during turbulent times.
I’m mainly in charge of managing the strategic direction of the firm to make sure we build long lasting relationships with key stakeholders, as well as supporting the team overcome any challenges within our sector.
It’s still all a bit surreal, but the first priority was of course the safety and wellbeing of the team. The next thing was going through bank statements line-by-line and re-negotiating expenditures. That exercise also gave me time to think and plan out different ways we could help our clients, which has allowed our business to pivot.
This time has actually forced me to make a few key business decisions and focus the company on delivering services in Bristol where our presence is strongest.
It has certainty shifted and opened my eyes to the daily roles and responsibilities of the team. I’ve been able to spend time coming up with ideas and solutions for some of those positive frustrations the team face.
This time has actually forced me to make a few key business decisions and focus the company on delivering services in Bristol where our presence is strongest. On a personal level, it means my days are not spent travelling around, leaving good quality time for family and personal wellbeing.
Being based at Origin Workspace also drums home the importance of looking after not only my own but my team’s wellbeing. From lunchtime yoga, to having the option to walk to work, it all helps keep the balance.
I’m actually quite familiar with the coworking space model and I think in Bristol, Origin Workspace comes closest to the coworking giants WeWork. Our team was at the heart of the decision to relocate to Origin Workspace. They wanted to be part of a like-minded community and Origin’s values align closely with ours, so it just felt right.
We know we’ve made the right decision to base ourselves at Origin Workspace because the team there have been so supportive during this time. From freezing fees, to checking in, to hosting virtual events to help members upskill, we can’t wait to get back into the building when it’s safe to do so.
This isn’t going to be for everyone but choose your daily drivers and understand what fuels you. Being passionate about the industry I’m in and genuinely wanting to offer something unique I would say is the big thing for me. Choose wisely what drives you so you can keep going rain or shine.
