8th Oct 2024

October 10th marks World Mental Health Day, a time to reflect on mental wellbeing across the globe. This year’s theme, “It is time to prioritise mental health in the workplace,” draws attention to the crucial need for supportive environments in our professional lives. As we navigate an era where stress and burnout are more prevalent than ever, it’s essential to address the underlying causes and create a culture that fosters mental wellbeing.

Prioritising Mental Health in the Workplace

The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day is a call to action for businesses to put mental wellbeing at the forefront. Creating a supportive work environment is not only beneficial for employees but also leads to higher levels of productivity, engagement, and job satisfaction. Here are some strategies that workplaces can adopt to prioritize mental health:

  1. Promote Open Communication: Encourage employees to speak openly about their mental health without fear of judgment or repercussions. Normalising these conversations can help create a culture of support.
  2. Flexible Working Conditions: Offering flexible hours can reduce stress and allow employees to balance work with other responsibilities.
  3. Encourage Regular Breaks: Regular breaks throughout the day, especially those that involve stepping away from screens, are essential for mental and physical wellbeing.
  4. Wellness Programs: Implementing wellness initiatives that include physical exercise, mindfulness practices, and stress-relief activities can make a significant difference in employees’ lives.

How Origin Workspace Supports Wellbeing

At Origin Workspace, we understand the importance of prioritising mental health in the workplace, especially when it comes to preventing burnout. As part of our commitment to supporting our members’ wellbeing, we offer a range of events and opportunities designed to help you take a break, reset, and rejuvenate.

  1. Our onsite Gym and Wellness Facilities: Our on-site gym is open to all members and is open days a week offering a convenient way to integrate physical exercise into your routine. Physical activity is a proven way to reduce stress, boost mood, and enhance overall wellbeing. 2. Wellness Classes and Events: At Origin Workspace, we regularly host wellness events that encourage members to take a break from their screens, engage in physical activities, or simply unwind. To honour World Mental Health Day, we’re excited to offer a special Barre class followed by a breakfast with a nutritionist and barre expert. In the past, we’ve also organised breathwork sessions, spinal assessments, and insightful sports panel discussions. With a range of weekly classes led by experienced practitioners, including physio-led Pilates, Yoga, and HIIT sessions, we’re proud to provide our community with diverse opportunities to focus on their wellbeing. Whether it’s a Yoga session, a mindfulness workshop, or a fitness class, these events are designed to help you recharge and return to your work with renewed focus.
  1. Community and Networking: At Origin Workspace, we believe that being part of a supportive community plays a crucial role in maintaining good mental health. We actively foster collaboration and networking, creating opportunities for members to connect with like-minded professionals who understand the challenges of the modern workplace. We are proud to host the quarterly ParkRun where members are rewarded with a fancy breakfast post-run at Ashton Gate. We’ve also expanded into racquet sports, hosting offsite Padel and Table Tennis matches. For those looking for more relaxed activities, we offer Movie Watch and Work parties, Monthly Happy Hours, and special invites to the Hippodrome, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
  2. Supportive and Friendly Staff: We understand that our team might be the first and last people you see each day, which is why we always strive to welcome you with a warm and helpful approach at reception. But our support doesn’t stop there, we’re proud to have our Managing Director Rob Hingston, and Commercial Manager Caroline Hamilton, who are both qualified Mental Health First Aiders. They are always available for a chat in person during business hours, offering an additional layer of care and support for our members.

Incorporating Wellbeing into Your Workday

Taking care of your mental health doesn’t have to be a complex process. Here are a few simple ways to integrate wellbeing practices into your everyday routine at work:

  • Take short and frequent breaks: Even a five-minute break every hour can make a big difference. Step away from your desk, stretch, and take a few deep breaths.
  • Stay hydrated and nourished: Proper nutrition and hydration are key to maintaining focus and energy levels throughout the day.
  • Practice mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness exercises into your routine, whether it’s through meditation apps, breathing exercises, or simply focusing on being present in the moment.
  • Connect with others: Social interaction can help reduce stress and increase your sense of belonging. Take time to chat with colleagues or join one of our community events.

Moving Forward Together

As we observe World Mental Health Day 2024, let’s remember that mental wellbeing is not a luxury it’s a necessity. It is indeed time to prioritise mental health in the workplace, not just as a one-day initiative but as a fundamental aspect of how we work and live. At Origin Workspace, we are proud to be part of this movement, offering our members the tools and resources they need to lead healthier, more balanced lives.

Together, we can create a work environment where mental health is valued, where burnout is addressed proactively, and where everyone has the support they need to thrive. Let’s make this World Mental Health Day the beginning of a healthier workplace culture for all.
