We talk to Origin Workspace member and Founder of Vounder Analytics, George Wright about his business and passion for data driven solutions.

After studying Maths & Physics at Bristol University, George moved to Australia and spent four years working for the department of environment, modelling air pollution. Driven by data analysis and with a passion for mathematical coding, he then headed to London for three years to shape his career in catastrophe modelling and actuarial work in the insurance industry.

Returning to Bristol in 2018, armed with a wealth of knowledge and experience, George had a clear vision on how to help companies understand their data and identify opportunities to help their clients. And so, Vounder Analytics was born.

Tell us more about Vounder Analytics
By using data and creating bespoke tools, we provide clear and independent insights, advice and solutions across the insurance and data worlds.

We specialise in helping insurance companies and brokers with the pricing models and methods and engage with clients in an efficient way which moves us forward from the document world to a document-plus-data world.

We have experience in insurance pricing systems, data collection, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) so we are currently helping organisations ensure they have all the information at hand so they can make the best decisions today.

Had you always wanted to start your own business?
I knew when I was working in London that I wanted to start my own consultancy. I have always been passionate about problem solving and I could see how the space I was working in should be operating and I really wanted to play a part in making a change happen.

What challenges does your business face?
We work on projects that require decision makers at top level to be on board. There is often a lack of understanding of the benefits in the work that we can provide, and a lack of understanding of the risks that will occur if companies do not start adapting quickly before it’s too late.

What’s next for Vounder?
Right now, we’re expanding. We have two new team members joining this Autumn which is exciting. I want to continue to build a team and help shape the market.

What does the future look like?
We’re committed in helping our clients recognise what an actuarial team and framework of the future should look like. We want to continue helping insurance organisations and brokers choose the right platforms and then build bespoke operating models so they can take advantage of a data driven marketplace.

For us at Vounder, the future is also about working on lots of interesting projects across different industries. It is not just insurance businesses that we can work with. Data can be used to help make informed decisions in any industry including healthcare, hospitality, security, and sports.

For example, we would like to build a tool using actuarial techniques to help people who run bars recognise when certain drinks are becoming popular and when trends are starting. It would be great to be able to recognise when trends are moving across the country.

We’re also currently looking at a project that would involve building a tool for the police that would help detective piece together crimes more quickly.

Why did Vounder choose co-working over leasing its own offices?
As the team grows, Origin Workspace offers the flexibility the business needs. The space feels very professional, so it is great for hosting client meetings. Whether I book a dedicated meeting room or go for a more informal catch up on the roof terrace, there are various options available.

What is it like being part of the community at Origin Workspace?
Being a small team, it is nice to feel part of something bigger and have more people to talk to. We get involved in the social events. There is a very inclusive vibe here and it feels great to be a part of it.
