It’s that time of year when we want to focus on getting life back on track after a summer break. If fitness is high on your autumn agenda, now’s the time to make use of the Origin Workspace gym. Not only is it available whenever you’re in the office space, we also have PT-Troop personal trainers on hand to help you get the most out of your workout.

We chat to personal trainer Tom Rendell to find out how PT-Troop he can help Origin Workspace members during their time in the gym, and he gives us his top tips for staying fit…

Tell us about your business

PT-Troop is a personal training business established in 2006. We have six personal trainers in our team and between us we have over 50 years of experience. Our youngest clients are under 10 and our oldest is 98!

What will you be doing at Origin Workspace?

It’s our job to encourage coworking space members to come and make use of the amazing gym. We’re here to help, so we want people to approach us and ask for help and advice on the great facilities we have.

The kit is totally functional – this means the only limit to the variety of exercises is your own imagination!

We’ll be running weekly classes which are evolving all the time – please see the members portal or speak to the community host team for up to date information. We’re also available for personal training at your convenience, either individually or as a group or friends and colleagues.

What’s your favourite thing about working in Bristol?

There’s a great open space within a few steps of anywhere. One of the best open spaces for training is Brandon Hill, which is right by Origin Workspace. It has so many hills, bars, benches and steps to train on whilst getting out of the traffic within a few seconds.

People say they don’t have time to train because they’ve only got 15 minutes. The truth is that even doing five minutes of something will benefit you infinitely more than doing nothing.

What’s your top tip for keeping active during the day if you work in an office?

We’re all so busy in between work, family and other commitments that it’s difficult to stay on top of fitness. My top tip refers back to the mnemonic FITT –

  1. Frequency
  2. Intensity
  3. Time
  4. Type

It’s all about how you can vary your training. Of all of these, frequency is the most important. How long, how hard and what exactly you do are secondary to doing something, regularly.

Personally, I have a 12-mile commute to get here and the difference in time between cycling and driving is five to 10 minutes, depending on traffic. This works incredibly well for me as even if my diary changes during the day I’ve still done some exercise!

How does staying fit and healthy benefit your working life?

Over the last 14 years I’ve noticed that people with a reasonable work/life balance are able to sustain the work output required to do well over a whole career.

My most successful clients in their careers are also the people who keep up regular training, regardless of the circumstances in their work. Obviously, the effort and time they can dedicate to it fluctuates, but the routine and fitness helps people keep up the energy levels required to sustain tough jobs.

Where should we go if we want to get in touch or find out more?

Find us in person around the Origin Workspace coworking space for a chat. The best place to find us is obviously the gym in the basement, but Russ Kent, Ed Tait and I will be increasingly visible around space. Or get in touch with me directly PT-Troop  (07876 334624; tom@pttroop.com), and I can tell you more about our training programmes.
