The Rules of Engagement showcase in Bristol has a good range of topics covered every month, so we asked a regular guest in the audience, Liam Williams a local illustrator to give his feedback on this month’s topics around career planning and working with Bristol micro-influencers.

After the routine pizzas and beers, the first keynote speaker was Sam Espensen – co-founder of Espensen Spirits. She kicked off the evening by asking everyone in the audience whether their job loved them?

Sam went on to explain her idea of asking this question to determine whether you are in the right role. Sam suggested exploring whether you make plans for your future together; have mutual trust and respect; communicate well; want what’s best for each other; have a healthy relationship; appreciate time apart; hold each other back; grow together; pride in each other; adapts to your needs; has shared responsibility; admits mistakes. Sam believes other people would meet their work goals by exploring these questions.

While plotting out her five-year plan, Sam really started thinking about how her career would fit with her life goals. By drilling down to the finer details of the sort of hobbies she wants to have, where she wanted to live, types of holidays she wanted to go on, it became really clear the sort of working environment that she would thrive in.

Sam’s advice? Work with a mentor so you can get tangible actions from your plan. By working with an expert Sam is now a co-founder of her own business and works on projects with people who are just as passionate about her business goals.

With a room motivated to rethink their career choices, it was time for a quick break before the next keynote.

The final talk of the evening was run by Heather Cowper, travel blogger and co-founder of Bristol Bloggers. With over 10 years experience in the industry, Heather talked about her experience of working with the SS Great Britain on the opening of the #BeingBrunel museum. Rather than opting for big named influencers, Heather talked through the campaign strategy of how micro-influencers can really have an impact when amplifying a campaign on social.

Last weekend saw the opening of the new #BeingBrunel museum in #Bristol @SSGreatBritain – It was great to see the ship with flags flying and with all the scaffolding and wrapping around the museum gone. . Also a perfect day to flying the rigging in the Go Aloft experience if you dare and get a view over Bristol’s Harbourside. I haven’t climbed the rigging myself but I’m working up to it! Would you dare? . . . . . . . #Bristol #livebristol #bristollife #ilovebristol #bristol_lens #bestofbristol #bristol247 #igersbristol #visitbristol #lovebristol #bristolcity #photosofbritain #capturingbritain #lovegreatbritain #explore_britain #bbcbritain #visitbritain #swisbest #visitengland #trips100 #bristolinsider #bristollifeinpictures #thebristolmag #joyfulbristol #bristolbloggers #westcountrylife #flags

The rest of the evening was fuelled with debate about the latest marketing campaigns that deserve medals and the ones that deserved to go to the sin bin.

If you enjoyed our review of the Rules of Engagement July Showcase, we also attended the May showcase which covered topics around mental health and making websites user-friendly.
